MONDAY (9/21)

Season premieres: Accidentally on Purpose, The Big Bang Theory, Castle, CSI: Miami, Dancing with the Stars, Heroes, House, How I Met Your Mother, Two and a Half Men

  • House (FOX, 8pm):  “Season 6 begins with House as a detoxing patient at a mental hospital. He concocts an escape plan aided by his roommate and a visitor named Lydia (Franka Potente).” Run House Run!
  • How I Met Your Mother (CBS, 8pm):  “The friends discover that Robin and Barney are secretly a couple.” He couldn’t stop talking aboot the girl he hooked up with last night.
  • Dancing with the Stars 9 (ABC, 8pm):  The opener begins with 16 celebrities including Lindsay Lohan’s ex (Aaron Carter), Shannen Doherty’s ex (Ashley Hamilton) and the ex-House Majority Leader (Tom DeLay). At least one of these guys has been disgraced.

Casting Corner: Caprica, Supernatural and More

Here’s a quick look at some of the casting announcements made recently:

 

Caprica: With all this talk about vampires, it’s nice to see James Marsters back in the fold. The Buffy vet will later be seen in a few episodes of the new Syfy series. Marsters has been cast as Barnabus Greeley, a “dangerous terrorist leader.” The program will unfold on January 22.

2009 Primetime Emmy Nominations

2009 Emmy nominations

Bright and early this morning, Chandra Wilson and Jim Parsons announced the nominees for the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards.

Just like last year, we saw many first-timers named and a long list of cable acknowledgements (for both pay and basic channels). Thanks to expanded categories, we also saw a number of surprises (Flight of the Conchords, ) and overdue nominations (How I Met Your Mother, Big Love).

For the second year in a row, , with its 16 nominations, topped all drama programs. Meanwhile, 30 Rock broke comedy records with a whopping 22 noms. Overall, HBO was the most-nominated network with 99 mentions while NBC - yes, NBC - came in second.

This year’s ceremony will be hosted by Neil Patrick Harris on Sept. 20 on CBS.

Here’s a quick look at some of the casting announcements made recently:

Desperate Housewives: Wondering what Susan’s daughter has been up to recently? Well, you will soon find out. Julie Mayer (Andrea Bowen) will be returning to Wisteria Lane next year…for probably more than just a quick visit. The network has confirmed that Julie, who was most most recently seen dating her professor, will at least be back for the September 27 premiere. (Sources say she will become a series regular.) Meanwhile, another young lady has been granted an extended stay. Maiara Walsh, who played Carlos’ niece Ana Solis, will be around to give Gaby grief for the entire season.

Getting Into Character: Wentworth Miller on SVU

Wentworth on SVU set

After four seasons of running away from the law, is now the one wearing the badge.

For the Season 11 premiere of , the Prison Break star will get a chance to use his steely glare once again. Miller, who’s only slated for one episode, will play Nate Kendal, a cop who helps a rape victim.

SVU returns on September 23.

Gossip Girl: A star of different CW show will become Nate Archibald’s latest love interest. On September 14, a blonde Joanna Garcia (Privileged) will begin a four-episode stint as Bree Buckley, a “Miss America-type Southern belle.” Later, another blonde - Hilary Duff - will set up shop as Olivia Burke, an actress-turned-college student. Duff will room with Vanessa, a fellow NYU student, for a few weeks starting on October 5.

SVU Brings Back Stephanie March

SVU's Stephanie March and Christopher MeloniSVU may be (temporarily) down a few cops, but the program is now up an ADA.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Alex Cabot’s substitution gig has just been given an extension. Actress Stephanie March - who was brought in during ’ absence this year - will appear in at last another 10 episodes next fall. Other ADAs will take over for those times she’s not around.

Although Christopher Meloni and Mariska Hargitay are still not guarantees for Season 11, it’s been reported that a deal is close.

Tuesday Ratings: New Shows Take Back Seat to Staples

CBS put forth very little effort last night, but still came away with two wins. Although it faced specials, originals, premieres and finales, the Eye network was on top with only repeats.

  • * (12.2 million, 2.2/7 in 18-49) easily won the hour.
  • NBC’s TV’s 50 Funniest Phrases (2.1/6) amused 6.6 million.
  • * (1.7/5) pulled in 4.2 million.
  • (1.1/3) returned to 3.7 million.
  • ‘s finale (2.2 million, 0.9/3) improved 400,000 over last week.
